Argument Essay: Writing to Convince ASSIGNMENT: From a credible news source, select an article (news article, feature story, editorial, or column—but not a letter to the editor) dealing with a current event or controversial topic. Choose the position that best represents your own view on the issue. You may agree with and/or refute the claims within the original. Once you select your controversial subject and decide on your position, gather two kinds of evidence: that which supports your position and that which opposes it. Then write an argument essay presenting your position on the issue. First you need to summarize the issue. You should also clarify the opposition. Be sure to present strong reasons in support of your conclusion; support your side with convincing evidence, concrete facts, and examples. You do not need to suggest a detailed solution; your goal is to convince your audience that your position on the issue is valid. AUDIENCE: Determine who your readers are.
If you perceive your readers are hostile, then you must establish your authority, present compelling evidence (that is, indisputable facts and carefully reasoned arguments), and avoid emotional appeals that they might perceive as an attack on their beliefs. Your goal is to encourage them to question their position.
If you perceive your readers are already committed to your position, it may not be necessary to write an argument dense with facts, examples, and statistics that they are already familiar with. Your goal will be to reinforce their support.
If you perceive your readers are uncommitted, then you must establish yourself as a reliable source and offer a detailed presentation of the evidence, one that not only informs them but also stirs their emotions. Your goal is to win their support.
