My selected topic was the effect of maternal prenatal care in preterm neonates. In my personal experience specific maternal prenatal complications, such as maternal hypertension, maternal diabetes, and maternal drug use, has a significant effect on the care provided to preterm neonates. According to the Journal of Pediatrics (2006), mothers who have been exposed to illicit drugs, tobacco, and alcohol had an increased risk for low birth weight infants and that these mothers were not receiving appropriate prenatal care before delivery with an increase admitting rate into level II and level III neonatal intensive care units.

I chose this PICOT question because prenatal care is a vital part in detecting any in utero abnormalities as well as post-delivery complications that may require intensive care stays. In my recent experiences, I have admitted more preterm infants with post-delivery complications with mothers who have not had prenatal care or minimal prenatal care. I’ve seen more stay an extended period of time in our neonatal intensive care units with an increase cost due to preventable maternal complications.
